Palestinian territories – Amanpour - CNN.com Blogs

By Mick Krever, CNN

Any “real peace” between Israeli and Palestinians will remain out of reach until both sides truly acknowledge each other’s tragedy, Israeli columnist and author Ari Shavit told CNN’s Hala Gorani, sitting Oakley Closeouts in for Christiane Amanpour, on Wednesday.

“The heart of this conflict is really mutual blindness.”

The Israelis are blind to the fact that there are a Palestinian people, he said, and the Palestinians blind to the Israelis, and their right to a Jewish state “in the ancient homeland of the Jews.”

That despite, he said, the “amazing” work U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has done trying to bring reconciliation.

Shavit has just written a new book, Oakley On Sale Sunglasses “My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel.”

United Kingdom – Amanpour - CNN.com Blogs

By Dominique van Heerden, CNN

As heads of state met in London for a major anti-poaching conference, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague spoke to CNN’s Christiane Amanpour about everything from poaching, to conflict in the Central African Republic and Syria, and the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi.

Wildlife poaching

The British government has just hosted the Illegal Wildlife Trading Conference in the hopes they, along with affected countries, can find a solution to protect the world’s most iconic species from extinction, because “we are in the eleventh hour”.

“Rhino populations have been devastated with one killed every ten or eleven hours at the moment. The illegal trade in ivory has doubled in the last six years,” Hague tells Amanpour.

Incidents of poaching are on the rise fueled by a growing demand for ivory and rhino horn in Asia.

There are also concerns that poaching is helping to fund violent groups in the region.

When asked what he expected to be different after this conference, Hague says this is a “turning point,” citing an important combination of measures that African countries are going to take, including destroying stockpiles of ivory.

And it’s not just African countries who have pledged to take action; he says the countries through whom these products are transported have committed to do more to intercept illegal ivory and “treat the trade as serious organized crime”.

“This is a moral issue that these great animals have as much right to inhabit this world as we do…”

Crisis in the Central African Republic

Another major problem stalking the African continent is the ongoing crisis in the Central African Republic, where the United Nations is warning of “ethnic cleansing” as fighting between Muslims and Christians spirals out of control.

Although there are already French troops in the country, and thousands of African forces are being deployed, Hague says they need more help, and “more help is coming from Europe”.

Britain will not be sending troops to the Central African Republic though, instead they will help with humanitarian aid and logistical support, “but other European countries are going to do more,” Hague tells Amanpour, and he says it is “absolutely crucial” to have the involvement and support of other African states.

Assad “not intending to budge”

Christiane Amanpour also spoke to the UK’s Foreign Secretary about Syria, and the lack of progress in trying to find a solution to the country’s civil war. As the latest round of Geneva talks failed to bring about any notable progress, William Hague says President Bashar al-Assad is “clearly not intending to budge”.

“This has gone backwards and forwards over three years now. And so I think it would be a mistake for this regime to think it’s now so strong it Discounted Oakley Sunglasses For Men doesn’t need to do anything.”

Britain is still providing help to the opposition, “practical support that isn’t lethal,” Hague says.

“We’ve never taken the position in any of these conflicts that we send lethal supplies. And it’s very hard for us to guarantee what happens to those lethal supplies. And that, of course, is a major difficulty for us.”

He adds that he is “not holding out any prospect” of changing position on lethal supplies in the near future, but says that Britain does want to be able to send “more practical support of other kinds that saves lives”.

The conflict in Syria is creeping closer to home for Britain where there are reports of British nationals traveling to Syria to fight in the war. Hague calls these reports “credible”.

“Hundreds of people from Britain and many other Western countries involved in going Oakley Cheap Deal to fight in Syria and that is a huge concern for us,” he says.

Asked how he plans to tackle the problem, Hague tells Amanpour there are some actions they can take, like depriving people of their passports and canceling visas for those who are resident in the UK, who they “believe are a threat”.

But ultimately, he says, “the solution lies in resolving the conflict in Syria… That is the only long-term answer to this”.

A final thought on Sochi

There was a lot of uproar in the weeks leading up to the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi over concerns about security and human rights in Russia.

But Cheap Fake Oakley Sunglasses Outlet despite the “differences” between Britain and Russia, William Hague says he wants it all to go well.

“We want any Olympics anywhere in the world to be successful and to be safe,” he says, “and yes we have some differences with Russia over some issues such as LGBT rights, but we want them to succeed in hosting a successful Olympics”.

Gay Rights – Amanpour - CNN.com Blogs

By Mick Krever & Claire Calzonetti, CNN

Love or country – it’s a decision many gay Americans with foreign partners are forced to make.

It may seem counterintuitive; in the past few years, a wave of American states have legalized gay marriage.

But because of a 1996 federal law, the Defense of Marriage Act, the federal government does not recognize those unions.

The result is that a heterosexual American can sponsor his or her partner for U.S. visa, but a gay American cannot.

Rather than break the law or split up, many gay couples are leaving American shores.

That was precisely the situation that Brandon Perlberg found himself in when his British partner, Benn Storey, who had been in the U.S. legally on temporary visas, was told it was unlikely he would ever obtain a green card to stay.

The couple had lived in New York for seven years, but upended their lives and moved to the United Kingdom to stay together.

“We never considered separating,” Storey told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour from London on Thursday.

“We had always thought that this was going to be our backup plan,” his partner, Perlberg, added. “At the beginning of last year, it became certain that if we did not move now, we really faced the risk of being indefinitely separated. And that wasn't a risk we were willing to face.”

In New York, Perlberg had been a practicing attorney. But his expertise in New York and Oakley Goggle Sunglasses American law was not valued in London, and he struggled to find a job.

“That was one of the most difficult parts of this process for me,” he said. “I spent eleven months hemorrhaging financially, burning through savings and going on interviews.”

President Obama has made immigration overhaul a top priority for his second term. Part of his proposal is to recognize, for the first time ever, gay partnerships when evaluating visa applications.

Perlberg, the American, said he is conflicted about his feelings for the U.S.

“On the one hand,” he said, “I love my country and I've never felt more personally attached and involved in Cheap Fake Oakley Sunglasses Outlet its future as I do right now, as there's a debate going on as to immigration and a debate going on as to same-sex marriage. At the same time, I cannot shake this feeling of resentment that I have, that our lives were taken away from us.”

Unlike many intra-national gay couples forced to choose between love and country, they had a fallback, because Storey happened to be from a country, the U.K., that allows gay citizens to bring in their foreign partners.

“We are very much the lucky ones,” Storey said. “There are people who have no option but to go back to their Oakley On Sale Sunglasses home country and separate from their partner.”

Ferry accident 71-year-old recalls how stranger saves her - CNN.com

Mokpo, South Korea (CNN) -- Tethered to an IV drip, 71-year-old Shin Young Ja lies under a thin fleece blanket, nursing a broken back and wracked with survivor's guilt.

"How could it be that an old woman like me survived and all these young people are still in there?" she says. "It's such a shame."

Shin is one of 13 survivors recuperating at the Mokpo Hankook Hospital.

She hasn't heard from the four friends she was traveling with on board the passenger ferry Sewol when it capsized in the frigid waters of the Yellow Sea on Wednesday morning.

"I don't think they made it out," Shin says, wiping away tears. "I didn't see their names on the list."

With each passing hour, hopes of finding more survivors have dimmed. By Friday, the death toll had climbed to 28. Rescue workers were scrambling furiously to find the roughly 270 who are still missing.

It's not lost on Shin that she could have been among the casualties had it not been for the determination of a young man who wouldn't give up when she did.

A young man she now wants to find and thank.

A few feet of difference

The only thing that separated Shin and her four friends was a matter of a few feet : where they sat on the third floor communal room of the ferry.

"The only reason I made it out was because I was on the other side (of the room) in front of the TV," she says.

Wednesday morning, after finishing breakfast, Shin sat away from her four friends to watch a soap opera. Then she heard screaming as people on one side of the room started "pouring down."

"Stacks of people" slid down the room as the boat tilted, she says

"So I grabbed onto a railing and they started sliding towards me."

Soon, she was swept along -- like a row of human dominoes.

"Everyone was swept to the one part of the hall."

The ship's announcement blared: "Do not move. Just stay where you are. It's dangerous if you move, so just stay where you are."

"If we don't move and do anything, it's more dangerous!" Shin recalls one of the men in the room say.

The announcement also advised that everyone put on life jackets.

Then the water came "in a flash."

"I was just sitting there and watching the water rising," Shin said.

Not giving up

Ignoring the pain shooting through her back, Shin donned a life jacket and swam across the room to get to those who sought refuge on top of a cabinet.

She was too exhausted to climb up. A young man noticed her and clutched her hand.

"Hold on to me tightly!" he told her.

"I can't hold on," Shin recalls telling him. She was too exhausted.

But he wouldn't give up.

He grabbed her hand and tried to pull her up. When he failed, he tried again. And again.

On his third try, he pulled her atop the furniture.

A crew spotted them banging against the window. They shattered the glass and pulled them through.

'I am grateful'

She spoke briefly to the young man on the rescue boat. She doesn't know his name, only that he's from Gimpo, an area in the capital Seoul.

Her family wants to find the man -- "even if we have to put up placards around neighborhood," she says.

"I'm grateful. I want to thank him. I want to buy him a meal at least or hold his hand or give him a hug.

"What else can I do?"

How groundbreaking number crunching found path of Flight 370 - CNN.com

(CNN) -- Monday's announcement Oakley Closeouts by Malaysia's Prime Minister opens the door to a big question: How did new number crunching confirm the Boeing 777's path?

Now we know for sure "there's no way it went north," said Inmarsat Senior Vice President Chris McLaughlin.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said Monday that the plane was last tracked over the middle of Oakley Sunglasses Discount Code the Indian Ocean, west of Perth, Australia. Malaysian Airlines has informed passengers' relatives that "all lives are lost," a relative told CNN.

Monday's announcement brings new questions about the mystery that has captivated the planet for more than two weeks. It also provoked a call that all airliners be constantly tracked.

The mathematics-based process used by Inmarsat and the UK's Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) to reveal the definitive path was described by McLaughlin as "groundbreaking."

"We've done something new," he said.

Here's how the process works in a nutshell: Inmarsat officials and engineers were able to determine whether the plane was flying away or toward the satellite's location by expansion or compression of the satellite's signal.

What does expansion or compression mean? You may have heard about something called the Doppler effect.

"If you sit at a train station and you listen to the train whistle -- the pitch of the whistle changes as it moves past. That's exactly what we have," explained CNN Meteorologist Chad Myers, who has studied Doppler technology. "It's the Doppler effect that they're using on this ping or handshake back from the airplane. They know by nanoseconds whether that signal was compressed a little -- or expanded -- by whether the plane was moving closer or away from 64.5 degrees -- which is the longitude of the orbiting satellite."

Each ping was analyzed for its direction of travel, Myers said. The new calculations, McLaughlin said, underwent a peer review process with space agency experts and contributions by Boeing.

It's possible to use this analysis to determine more specifically the area where the plane went down, Myers said. "Using trigonometry, engineers are capable of finding angles of flight."

No surprise

Experts said they weren't surprised by the news that the flight traveled along the southern track -- one of two possible paths revealed by satellite data last week. The possible northern track toward Pakistan would have been heavily monitored by radar. Pakistan had said it found no evidence of Flight 370 on its radar systems.

"It was very difficult to believe that no watch captain" along the possible northern path "would've seen a burning or distressed aircraft in the sky during the course of their watch," said McLaughlin.

Is the more pinpointed flight path now focused enough to increase the chances of finding wreckage from the Oakley Sunglasses Australia plane?

If the flight definitely ended far from land, does that support the theory that the plane was not hijacked? It's just one question of many that investigators likely will be pondering in the coming days.

Hours before the Prime Minister's announcement, Australian officials said they had spotted two objects in the southern Indian Ocean that could be related to the flight, which has been missing since March 8.

One object is "a gray or green circular object," and the other is "an orange rectangular object," the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said.

"This is obviously a major tragedy," McLaughlin said. "The only thing you can hope is that from this, just as the Titanic resulted in (new safety legislation), that from this, there will be a mandate that all aircraft should be constantly tracked."

Minimum wage fight Here we go again - Fortune Management

Minimum wage advocates are gearing up for battle amid the release of a government report that a boost to the hourly pay rate could cost the U.S. economy 500,000 jobs.

By Elizabeth G. Olson

140219143727-fast-food-workers-protest-620xa

FORTUNE -- A new non-partisan report has set off a storm of dueling arguments over the perennially testy question of raising the minimum hourly wage.

The proposal, by Democrats, to would bring some 900,000 families above the poverty line and boost the income of an additional 16.5 million workers, but any such pay increase could also cost the jobs of as many as 500,000 workers, an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office found.

Almost as soon as the report was released Tuesday, opponents began to cite the report in an effort to torpedo any Congressional vote to hike the federal minimum from $7.25 per hour to $10.10 by 2016.

One such detractor was House Speaker John Boehner, Republican of Ohio, who noted through a spokesman that, "While helping some, mandating higher wages has real costs, including fewer people working.

MORE:?

"With unemployment Americans' top concern, our focus should be creating -- not destroying -- jobs for those who need them most."

Supporters of the proposal rallied to defend the proposed wage increase, noting that an array of economic studies examining prior increases had established that job losses would be minimal.

"Zero is a perfectly reasonable estimate of the impact of the minimum wage on employment," said Jason Furman, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, in a conference call with reporters to respond to the CBO findings.

Joseph Stiglitz of Columbia University, one of 600 economists who signed a letter endorsing a rise in the minimum wage, said, on a separate conference call, that the CBO "has underestimated the benefits and overestimated the costs."

He and other economists on the call said the CBO report did not consider how additional wages will increase productivity and reduce turnover, absenteeism, and dependence on federal benefits.

"The cost," Stiglitz noted, "is typically passed on. And, yes, it does come at the expense of the upper-income individual, but they are doing well, and this only rectifies the inequality to a minor extent."

Overall, as many as 27.8 million workers could see more money in their pockets with a minimum wage rise because other workers who are already earning in the $10 range would likely receive boosts to their paychecks, the economists said.

President Obama initially supported a federal minimum age of $9 per hour, but has since backed the larger increase as Democrats seek to make the effort a campaign issue this fall.

The CBO analysis looked at the effects of both $9 and of $10.10 minimum wage, but concluded the lower amount would lift only 300,000 workers above the poverty line, but could result in 100,000 jobs being lopped off. The rise to $10.10 would bring three times as many workers out of poverty, but could translate into a loss of an estimated half-million jobs, according to the CBO.

The proposal is expected to face a vote in the Senate later this year, and may pass, but it will likely to be avoided by the Republican-dominated House.

Proposals to lift the minimum wage typically are fraught efforts as business owners, particularly those in the food industry, warn they will need to fire people to offset the higher salary requirements, and that customers will not pay higher prices to support the wage increases.

MORE:?

That's been accepted wisdom by many until higher-wage proponents began arguing that many low-wage workers rely on publicly financed benefits such as food stamps to make ends meet. Rallies have been held at fast-food outlets in a number of cities over the past year to highlight the connection between taxpayer subsidies and the lower wages companies pay.

Critics have argued that minimum-wage jobs are starter jobs held by teenagers for spending money, but recent studies have found that most of these workers are in their 30s, have children, and work full-time.

Skirmishes over raising the wage floor date back to 1938, when the first law was passed to set a minimum wage amount, and nearly every effort to raise it has brought accusations of government interference.

gucci borse By Mick Krever, CNN

By Mick Krever, CNN

The standoff between Russia, Ukraine, and the West has reached the “eleventh hour,” Andrei Kozyrev, the first post-Soviet Russian foreign minister, told gucci borse CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Monday.

“The [stakes are] still very, very high,” he said. “Let me just remind whoever concerned that Russia is still [a] nuclear superpower. So the [stakes] might be life and death. And maybe sooner than somebody is thinking.”

“It’s [the] eleventh hour for Russians, and for anybody else, to reconsider.”

A week after Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine, there is still considerable concern and uncertainty about what Russian President Vladimir Putin’s next move might be.

Russian military forces are massed along Ukraine’s eastern border. NATO’s top military official called them “very, very sizable and very, very ready.”

Ready for what exactly is not clear.

“We can only guess what actually happens next,” Kozyrev said. “It’s very much an impromptu kind of show.”

Few people are better positioned to analyze the situation than Kozyrev and Strobe Talbott, former deputy U.S. Secretary of State in the Clinton administration.

Together, they worked to manage Russia’s last big transition: the break-up of the Soviet Union and the birth of the Russian Federation.

Talbott chimed in on Kozyrev’s sentiment.

“I think [Putin] has been making this up as he goes along.”

In an interview with Amanpour last week, Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said that Crimea was just the Cheap Oakleys Russian president’s “opening game.”

Putin “is already going further than just in Crimea,” Talbott said. “Now that doesn’t mean that he has actually formally moved in, annexed territory, had an overt invasion.”

“But through all kinds of assets that Russia has inside of Ukraine, he is doing everything he can to shake the situation up, destabilize the country, so that he can have more leverage over what happens next.”

The choice Russia now finds itself, Kozyrev said, is a stark one.

“Now it’s the choice: Either to Europe or back to the USSR.”

Europe must stand with the United States, Kozyrev said, and make clear to “Russian oligarchs and their proxies” that they can no longer take the revenues abroad and leave the rest “with the Soviet Union.”

There is some strain of thought that with the fall of the Soviet Union, the West saw Russia as a “loser” – now, the thought goes, Putin is trying to regain Russia’s greatness.

“We did not regard the peoples of the former Soviet Union…as losers,” Talbott said. “Quite the opposite. We saw them as having seen a way that would actually protect their people from ending up, as it were, on the dust bin of history.”

Putin “wants to take the Russian Federation back to a system that has already been proved Discount Oakley Sunglasses a failure.”

“I thought after the fall of the Soviet Union that we have to choose democracy and market economy. But competitive democracy and competitive economy.”

The Russian elite facing difficult reforms, chose to leave to go elsewhere, Kozyrev said. louis vuitton

“That is, take the cash and go to London or New York and leave the rest of it back home under the custody of the former security apparatus. And unfortunately that happened in the second part of the Yeltsin administration.”

“It’s time now to wake up – for all of us in Russia and for the West. And the sooner the better, because time is ticking.”

By Mick Krever, CNN

NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview on Monday that he is “concerned about Russian military activities along the borders of Ukraine.”

Amanpour asked Rasmussen if he was worried that Russia may be “stirring up trouble” in eastern Ukraine as a pretext for intervention. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday warned of “continuing provocations” in Eastern Ukraine.

“Absolutely,” Rasmussen said. “That is a possibility, that is a clear risk that would further deteriorate the whole situation.”

With more than 20,000 Russian soldiers in Crimea, according to the interim Ukrainian government, Crimeans voted overwhelmingly to leave Ukraine and join Russia.

Thailand is investigating the two stolen passports held by passengers on missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in an exclusive interview on Monday.

“We don't know about their nationality yet,” Yingluck told Amanpour, pledging “full support” with international investigators. “We gave orders for the police to investigate the passport users.”

“At the same time, our Royal Air Force has been assigned, together with the Navy, to search for the disappeared airplane in conjunction with the Malaysian government.”

Search and rescue officials said Monday they will expand the search area for the Malaysia Airlines aircraft that vanished three days ago.

“At the moment,” Prime Minister Yingluck said, “we have not yet discovered anything.”

The Malaysian government has Oakley Breathless Sunglasses divided up the ocean in order to aid the search, she told Amanpour.

While Thailand remains at the heart of the search for the downed plane, Yingluck herself has been at the heart of months of protests.

Her government was largely stable until her party attempted to pass a controversial amnesty bill in November, sparking the current wave of protests. The bill would have nullified a corruption conviction against her brother, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

“We will not return the amnesty legislation again,” she said, but added that the opposition has continued their protests nonetheless.

“Their demands are unconstitutional and undemocratic, which my government cannot accept.”

The People's Democratic Reform Committee has called for Oakley Sunglasses the democratically elected Yingluck to be replaced with an unelected "people’s council," which would see through electoral and political changes.

Yingluck’s brother was ousted in a military coup in 2006, and is currently living in self-imposed exile in Dubai.

Many of Prime Minister Yingluck’s opponent accuse her of being a puppet, with her brother pulling the strings of government from abroad.

“May I say that I am…a Prime Minister, who [has been] able to run the country for over two years,” she said. “But I understand their feeling, as I was born from that country so I have used my ability to win the peoples’ trust.”

“If I had to rely on other people or my brother, I believe I wouldn’t have solved the problems,” she told Amanpour, such as massive floods the country faced in 2011.

Yingluck’s government seems to have survived the protests so far, but she still face an ongoing legal challenge over a rice subsidy Oakley Sideways scheme.

The country’s National Anti-Corruption Commission has said it will bring charges against Yingluck over the program, which pledged to pay farmers well above the market rate for their rice but has run into financial problems.

Yingluck told Amanpour that her government fully briefed the Thai people and parliament on the program.

“There has been no investigation of me yet,” she said. “There is an appropriate procedure to give evidence to the commission, then they can decide the facts.”

Amanpour asked Yingluck if she feared a military coup against her government, especially give the action taken against her brother.

“I believe it is a sufficient lesson for us to realize that the coups are not the way to solve the problems of Thailand,” she said. “I believe that if we keep peace and avoid serious incidents, the military coups cannot take place in Thailand.”

“Today our world has changed. Many countries can see that any rebellious actions are not the solution. And other countries will not let Thailand enter into the coups mode.”

CNN’s Kocha Olarn and Ashley Fantz contributed to this report.
